What most people think is that a retaining wall just has to be straight and sturdy. Although this is right, there is much more to it than just that.

Use River Rock On Base – One thing I strongly recommend is that you set the foundation using small river rocks. The benefit of using these is that the structure will hold better and the rocks will do the shifting while the retaining wall stays in place.
Remove Material Behind Wall – If you didn’t remove the dirt or rocks behind the retaining wall area, then you need to do that now. The reason you do this is so that you don’t have anything pushing the wall outwards when it should be leaning into the material a little bit.
Metal Posts Not Wood – If you are thinking about using wood posts to hold off the material behind the retaining wall then think again. Wood will rot rather quickly and sometimes it will bend. If you are measuring off the posts to figure out how far you need to be out, then this could throw off your entire wall. Do yourself a huge favor and make sure you are using metal posts as opposed to wood so that you don’t have to worry about the little things making a huge difference.
