Concrete Paving
There are many advantages to concrete paving compared to asphalt paving. First is the color: concrete is brighter, which allows for a cleaner driveway compared to the basic black of asphalt. Concrete is also very durable, which is why most roads are paved with it. Roads paved with concrete will generally last a lot longer and the paving process is also relatively quick, which means less delays in traffic.
Compared to asphalt, which is very flexible concrete is rigid. Asphalt tends to be susceptible to cracks due to the normal shifts in the ground that happen during the year. Concrete tends to be better at resisting changes in the weather and temperature. When paving a driveway with asphalt you will have to lay a base with gravel and stone and then let it settle for a while (unless you have a commercial roller). Concrete only requires a base subcourse between the main layer and the ground, which means less work.
Due to its rigid, stiff nature concrete will distribute the load evenly over an area and any gaps that appear when pouring it can easily be filled.
It is also a lot easier to remove stains from concrete and it can be painted in different colors using special paint. You can´t do this with asphalt. Concrete can also handle heavy vehicles better and will keep its smooth surface for far longer.
In the end, concrete has many advantages over asphalt. It offers a great combination of strength and durability and is easier to work with than asphalt.
Concrete Crusher
Concrete crusher
Concrete is composed by cement, aggregate (gravel), and water. Concrete crusher is used to crush natural stones into eligible aggregate or gravel. There are several crushers that can be used as concrete crusher. Jaw crusher, impact crusher, cone crusher, vsi crusher have their own special benefits. In common, we compose these crushers into a complete concrete crushing plant.
Mobile concrete crusher
According to the affect of crushing plot, we usually use mobile concrete crusher as concrete crusher. Mobile concrete crusher is also called protable concrete crusher. It advantages are following:
1. Flexible Maneuverability
2. Reduce the cost of transporting materials
3. High efficiency and direct working
4. Better adaptability and flexible layout
5. Reliable performance and easy maintenance
Concrete crusher plant
Aggregate is the stones that are cubic, but natural stones is big and anomalous, and need to be crushed into small pieces with cubic shape.
Concrete crushing plant
concrete crusherThe complete concrete crushing plant is consist of jaw crusher, impact crusher, cone crusher, vsi crusher, belt vonveyor and vibrating screen. Big stones evenly enter into the primary crusher for first crushing, usually it is jaw crusher, then go into the impact crusher or cone crusher for secondary crushing. After secondary crushing, the stone enter into the vsi crusher for shapping. Aggregate through the vsi crusher mainly is cubic, then is screened out the suitable pieces. While the unsuitable stones return to the crusing plant.

What is The History of Earth Day? Epa Planet Polls
What is the history of Earth Day? EPA Planet Polls. According to Gaylord Nelson Earth Day worked because of spontaneous response at the grassroots level.
Thirty-five years before Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth made global warming a household term and the green movement went mainstream, some 20 million people across the United States celebrated the first Earth Day, on April 22, 1970. Today, more than 1 billion people around the world take part in the event.
Earth Day History
Until that time, protecting the planet’s natural resources was not part of the national political agenda. Factories pumped pollutants into the air, lakes and rivers with few legal consequences, big, gas-guzzling cars were considered a sign of prosperity and few Americans were familiar with recycling. Senator Gaylord Nelson, a Democrat from Wisconsin who was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1962, was determined to wake up the federal government to the fact that the earth was at risk. In 1969, Nelson, considered one of the leaders of the modern environmental movement, developed the idea for Earth Day.
Nelson announced the Earth Day concept at a conference in Seattle in the fall of 1969 and invited the entire nation to get involved. As he later recalled: “The wire services carried the story from coast to coast. The response was electric. It took off like gangbusters. Telegrams, letters and telephone inquiries poured in from all across the country. The American people finally had a forum to express its concern about what was happening to the land, rivers, lakes and air—and they did so with spectacular exuberance.”
Dennis Hayes, a young activist who had served as student president at Stanford University, was selected as Earth Day’s national coordinator, and he worked with an army of student volunteers and several staff members from Nelson’s Senate office to organize the project. According to Nelson: “Earth Day worked because of the spontaneous response at the grassroots level. We had neither the time nor resources to organize 20 million demonstrators and the thousands of schools and local communities that participated. That was the remarkable thing about Earth Day. It organized itself.”
On April 22, rallies were held in Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles and “most other American cities,” according to the Environmental Protection Agency. “In fact, 80 percent of all observances were urban affairs.” In New York City, Mayor John Lindsay closed off a portion of Fifth Avenue to traffic for several hours and spoke at a Union Square rally with actors Paul Newman and Ali McGraw. In Washington, D.C., thousands of people listened to speeches and performances by singer Pete Seeger and others and Congress went into recess so its members could speak to their constituents at Earth Day events.
The first Earth Day was effective at raising awareness about environmental issues and impacting public attitudes. According to the Environmental Protection Agency: “Public opinion polls indicate that a permanent change in national priorities followed Earth Day 1970”. When polled in May 1971, 25 percent of the U.S. public declared protecting the environment to be an important goal, a 2,500 percent increase over 1969.” Today, it is hard to recall that most conservation organizations were uninvolved in lobbying against pollution in the 1960s — not seeing what it had to do with wildlife — and most urban-oriented groups were dismissive of the “birds and squirrels” groups.) By the end of 1970, the linkage was clear to all, and the next few years amply demonstrated the political power of their combined forces.
During the 1970s, a number of important pieces of environmental legislation were passed, among them the Clean Air Act, the Water Quality Improvement Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Toxic Substances Control Act and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act.
Another key development was the establishment, in December 1970, of the Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, which was tasked with protecting human health and safeguarding the natural environment—air, water and land. Before the agency was founded, “the federal government was not structured to make a coordinated attack on the pollutants that harm human health and degrade the environment,” according to EPA dot-gov.
Earth Day 1990
When the National Earth Day Committee evaluated potential sponsors for the 20th anniversary of Earth Day, only SEVEN companies in the United States made the grade.
To get past the screening committee and become a sponsor, a company had to demonstrate a proven commitment to environmental values. If a company had not endorsed the Valdez Principles (now called Ceres)- a set of 10 rules – governing its behavior – it had to introduce a major corporate environmental program developed in conjunction with Earth Day Staff.
“No polluters were allowed,” , said Maureen Early, a spokeswoman at the National Earth Day Committee in Palo Alto, California. A research firm donated its services, so the group had access to the environmental records of companies. Early declined to name those that did not qualify, but said about 100 companies called the group. “We wanted to include corporations that are environmentally responsible and progressive,” said Christina Dresser, executive director of the The National Earth Day Committee.
As a result, the committee chose only seven corporations to be the official sponsors: Shaklee Corporation, Aveda Corporation, Church and Dwight Co. Inc., California Energy Inc., (a supplier of geothermal energy), Conservatree (recycled paper), and Smith and Hawken (a garden accessory supplier)
Dennis Hayes, who now was the chairman of the 20th anniversary of Earth Day, warned consumers against being wooed by companies with slick public relations messages that tout environmental concerns. In a magazine published by Environmental Action Inc., he stated “If polluting corporations have the temerity to wrap themselves in the Earth Day flag, then they should be held accountable to the public by making concrete changes in business practices or suffer public exposure.”
As the 20th anniversary of Earth Day approached, conditions seemed ripe to take Earth Day to an international audience. Ozone depletion, climate change, threats to the world’s oceans, and other trans-boundary issues were receiving more media attention. A successful Earth Day could be instrumental in encouraging heads of state to personally attend the forthcoming UN Earth Summit in Brazil, and vote on behalf of several important conventions.
Hayes, by then an attorney, took leave from his law firm to serve as the full-time Chair and CEO. Senator Nelson, then Counselor to the Wilderness Society, agreed to serve as Honorary Chair, and he pursued an extensive speaking schedule on behalf of the event. As stated, Christina Desser was Executive Director, while Mark Dubois and Teresa McGlashin co-directed international outreach.
By April, 1990, events had been organized in 141 countries. Estimates of participants around the world ranged as high as 200 million.
Earth Day 2000+
In 2000, Earth Day focused on clean energy and involved hundreds of millions of people in 184 countries and 5,000 environmental groups, according to EDN. Activities ranged from a traveling, talking drum chain in Gabon, Africa, to a gathering of hundreds of thousands of people at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Today, the Earth Day Network collaborates with over 17,000 partners and organizations in 174 countries. According to EDN, more than 1 billion people are involved in Earth Day activities, making it “the largest secular civic event in the world.”
Earth Day ’70: What It Meant, by Gaylord Nelson [EPA Journal - April 1980] excerpt
“In the 1970s, a sufficiently large and dispersed group of people recognized the fragility and finite nature of the Earth’s ecosystem, understood that everything is connected to everything else, and accepted the responsibility not only to set straight the mistakes of the past but to avoid repeating them in the future. So long as the human species inhabits the Earth, proper management of its resources will be the most fundamental issue we face. Our very survival will depend upon whether or not we are able to preserve, protect and defend our environment. We are not free to decide about whether or not our environment “matters.” It does matter, apart from any political exigencies. We disregard the needs of our ecosystem at our mortal peril. That was the great lesson of Earth Day. It must never be forgotten.” Senator Nelson (D-Wis.) proposed Earth Day ’70.
Tsunami of Mud, Rocks, And Water.
Never have we seen so many occurrences of landslides/mudslides over a short period of just a few months (May-August 2010), albeit happening in different locations. In late May 2010, heavy rains brought flooding and landslides which killed 53 people in China’s south-western Guangxi region. Elsewhere in Jiangxi, landslides derailed trains and caused the temporary closure of the Shanghai-Kunming railway line. On 27th July 2010, a landslide similarly triggered, flattened part of a village in Sichuan, southern China killing twenty-one people. Huge amounts of rocks and mud which slid down Ermanshan Mountain engulfed dozens of houses in Shuanghe village. (i)
Fifty-seven people were killed in a landslide in Dazhai village, Guizhou province, south-western China in the latter half of June 2010. The landslide buried more than100 people in their homes, trapped numerous others, and cut off the village from access by rescuers. In the landslide, at least 30 students were trapped in the building of a local school. The disaster happened quickly that residents of the ill-fated village had almost no chance to escape. The houses were buried within two minutes by the mudslides. Even as the rainstorms subsided, threats of more landslides remained. The remaining residents were evacuated from the area as the soil was still unstable and more landslides feared. At its height, the risk of flooding and landslides in China forced the evacuation of at least 4.66 million people.
In mid-July heavy rains across southern and central China caused havoc, triggering landslides which left dozens of people dead or missing. Landslides occurred in Yunnan, Sichuan and Hunan provinces. In one of the worst incidents, 13 people were killed in Xiaohe village in Yunnan province, after the side of a mountain collapsed burying houses. (ii)
In the “deadliest mudslide” at Zhouqu, Gansu province, rescue workers could not use heavy machinery as mud blocked roads and bridges, leaving rescuers to dig with shovels and their bare hands. Thousands of rescue workers had to dredge through thick mud and debris. Access was almost impossible with roads blocked by mud several feet thick in places and bridges destroyed. Attempts to clear the sludge were severely hampered since there was no way to get in heavy equipment. In such hazardous situation, only survivors who had not been buried were found occasionally. Accumulated debris comprising rocks, cars, and chunks of buildings blocked a river nearby posing potential threats of further mudslides. The accumulated debris was only dislodged after soldiers used explosives to clear the river. As efforts to remove the blockage and prevent further mudslides proceeded, about 19,000 people living in two towns below the blockage point were evacuated.
In the Zhouqu disaster, mudslides engulfed the town, killing more than 1,200 people and leaving nearly 2,000 residents missing. Rescue teams dug out crushed homes and had to blast away the debris clogged river. The Zhouqu County in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Gansu Province, a region dominated by steep and barren hills was hit by flooding and mudslides after a spate of torrential rains. Following the heavy downpour, runoff built up behind a landslide on the Bailong River which courses through the main town in Zhouqu. The flooding and mudslides were triggered after the clogged river burst through its levels. Both the Bailong River and the town are located in a narrow valley. At the height of the floods, it covered about half of the Zhouqu county seat, with a population of about 40,000 residents. The flood water reached up to three storeys high on some buildings. Hence when the mudslides struck many single storey houses were wiped out. (iii)
News reports conveyed pictures of mud and water covering town streets, motor vehicles being swept downstream and rescuers frantically digging through debris in search of victims. The mud dumped on the streets was up to two metres deep. The disaster struck at midnight when most of the victims were in their homes, asleep and unaware of what was happening .
Torrential rains which lasted overnight flooded the Bailong River, which became blocked with mud and debris, creating a 3-kilometre long lake. When the lake overflowed the sudden burst sent mud and rocks gushing into the town, smashing cars and toppling buildings. Part of the town was submerged under as much as one metre of water. The town’s remote mountainous location and the amount of mud and water covering the area hindered the emergency response.
The area struck by China’s deadliest mudslides in decades was already known to be vulnerable to flooding and landslips following heavy tree-felling and rapid hydro-development. Already deemed as “a high-occurrence disaster zone for landslides” the Bailong River that rushes through the valley risks getting swollen and pent up behind a loose dam of landslide debris. The 576-kilometre long (358 miles) Bailong River is considered to be in a fragile state, the river and its surrounding slopes already prey to manmade problems, its battered natural environment in urgent need to be rejuvenated. The Bailong River has been over-exploited by rapid hydropower development. (iv)
While Zhouqu received the world’s full attention, another mudslide hit the south-western Chinese province of Sichuan killing five people and trapped more than 500. It was only two years ago (2008) when Sichuan was really hit hard by a massive earthquake in which at least 80,000 people died. Threats of more landslides along the Bailong River remained “relatively large” as more rains forecasted as of August 13 2010. On August 12th, an overnight deluge triggered mudslides which swept away six houses in Xizangba village, blocked a river near Libazi village, and obstructed a key road used to ferry relief supplies. Another mudslide in nearby Tianshui city buried seven people.
Looking at the mudslide disaster in Zhouqu in particular, do we see the potential for similar problems (Heavens Forbid!) in our jurisdiction? Has past economic activities left a negative impact on our own environment? Have we identified the potential hazard spots where the local populations are in direct danger of landslides/mudslides threats?

Japan?s Reactors Still ?not Stable,? U.s. Regulator Says
“We don’t see significant changes from day to day,” the chairman, Gregory B. Jaczko, said, while adding that the risk of big additional releases gets smaller as each day passes.
Long-term regular cooling of the reactors has not been re-established, nor has a regular way of delivering water to the spent-fuel pools, he told the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. And when an aftershock hit the site and cut some offshore power supplies, he said, some pumps failed and cooling stopped for 50 minutes.
The situation is “not stable” and will remain so until “that kind of situation would be handled in a predictable manner,” he said.
Mr. Jaczko also offered a new theory about the cause of the explosions that destroyed the secondary containment structures of several of the reactors. The prevailing theory has been that hydrogen gas was created when the reactor cores overheated and filled with steam instead of water; the steam reacts with the metal, which turns into a powder and then gives off hydrogen.
The Tokyo Electric Power Company, which operates the nuclear plant, intended to vent the excess steam as well as the hydrogen outside of the plant, but experts have suggested that when operators tried this, the vents ruptured, allowing the hydrogen to enter the secondary containments.
But Mr. Jaczko said Tuesday that the explosions in the secondary containments might have been caused by hydrogen created in the spent-fuel pools within those containments.
If true, that would mean that the introduction of hardened vents at reactors at nuclear plants in the United States — cited as an improvement that would prevent such an explosion from happening — would not in fact make any difference.
That theory also raises the possibility that it may be safer to move some of the spent fuel out of the pools in the containment structures and into dry storage, an idea that is attracting some support in Congress. Spent nuclear fuel must remain in water for the first five years or so to cool but can then can be stored in small steel-and-concrete silos with no moving parts.
The industry uses these “dry casks” only when its pools are full. And so far the regulatory commission has said that pool and cask storage are equally safe. Still, some industry executives would like to tap the Nuclear Waste Fund, federal money set aside for a permanent waste repository, to pay for cask storage, an idea that is also favored by some environmentalists.
Mr. Jaczko’s statement on the possible source of the hydrogen is the third big reversal in commission statements on the nuclear crisis at Fukushima.
Commission officials have also seemed less certain after stating that the spent-fuel pool in the No. 4 reactor was empty or close to empty, a situation that was evidently the basis for recommending a 50-mile evacuation for Americans in the plant’s vicinity. Commission experts also said that radiation readings suggested that core material had slipped out of the vessel of the No. 2 reactor and entered a drywell in the primary containment, only to retreat again on whether that was in fact the case.
Mr. Jaczko also signaled that the regulatory commission itself was shifting from an extreme alert mode to a more sustainable long-term effort to monitor Japan’s crisis. Staffing in the commission’s round-the-clock emergency center at its headquarters in Rockville, Md., has been reduced, he said, with many staff members returning to their regular duties but available for consultation when events warrant.
He drew praise from the committee’s chairwoman, Senator Barbara Boxer, a California Democrat, but criticism as well. She is seeking an especially high level of scrutiny for two twin-reactor plants in her state, the only ones that the commission says are in zones of high seismic activity. Mr. Jaczko said that all reactors were being evaluated.
She countered by saying that those two plants, Diablo Canyon and San Onofre, were at the highest risk. Mr. Jaczko said they were not, explaining that they were designed with the earthquake risk in mind and that risks to American plants generally were small.
Ms. Boxer replied that the Japanese had said the same thing, at least until the March 11 accident. “It’s eerie to me,” she said. “I don’t sense enough humility from all of us here.”
Another witness, Charles G. Pardee, the chief operating officer of Exelon Generation, the largest nuclear operator in the United States, also testified that the nation’s nuclear plants were designed for the worst natural disaster observed in their areas, plus a substantial margin.
Thomas B. Cochran, a physicist at the Natural Resources Defense Council, gave some credit to American operators. Worldwide, he said, reactors are “not sufficiently safe,” but “the next nuclear power plant disaster is more likely to occur abroad than in the U.S.”
But the industry will have to rethink its practices nonetheless, he said. “If the nuclear power industry is to have a long-term future, attention must be paid to existing operating reactors,” Mr. Cochran said. He ticked off a long list of factors, including American reactors that share Fukushima’s basic design, that would be grounds for phasing them out.

Part of the economy at a high level of sub industries such as container, bearings, valves, motors, general instrumentation, would face high fall risk; and early fall the larger sub sectors such as construction machinery is expected to gradually stabilize; shipbuilding, railways transportation equipment manufacturing is expected to continue to maintain recovery momentum. With the steel prices are expected in the second half of the decline, industry gross margin is expected to stabilize or rise slightly.
Machinery industry faces increasing cost pressures, the reason is that steel, oil, electricity, transportation, human resources and other prices rising. As revenue growth slowed, while the costs, machinery industry, significant decline in gross margins.Decline in revenue growth, gross margin declined in the background, the industry also showed a visible decline in profit growth. The first half of the industry profit growth of 124.17 percent from the same period last year dropped to 25.23%. One of ordinary machinery manufacturing, special equipment manufacturing, instrumentation equipment, the total profits of the manufacturing sector growth is also from last year’s 126.77%, 88.39% and 104.1% respectively in May of this year dropped to 32.58%, 10.53% and 17.96%, decline was relatively clear.
Differentiation of Sub Sectors Boom
The declining growth rate in the industry as a whole against the background of machinery industry has divided the sub sectors. According to the first 5 months of statistical data, container, bearings and valves, agricultural machinery, metallurgical and mining equipment, electrical machinery, general instrumentation, boiler manufacturing economy continued high growth rate of cumulative total profits were maintained at 40%; and dedicated instruments, electronic measurement, measuring equipment, engineering machinery, and several other sub sectors have seen a decline in sales revenue, profit fall significantly situation; degree in mechanical industry, the overall decline in the context of the economy, rail transportation equipment, ship manufacturing two sub sectors from past losses into profits, the industry significant signs of recovery.
Within the machinery industry, basic materials, such as bearing shaft, valves, and other common components of most mechanical equipment, the upstream industry, macro economic slowdown in the first or fixed asset investment will lead to a slowdown in demand for large scale machinery and equipment, and then affect their upstream of the basic parts industry, so generally speaking, the basic parts of the economy lags behind the changes in machinery and equipment changes in the economy.Guo Yaling said that in the machinery industry wide context of declining growth rate is expected to drop a significant reduction in the first half of special equipment manufacturing, instrumentation, manufacturing and transportation equipment manufacturing industry will become more stable in the second half; and by the lag effect , general machinery industry (including boilers, metal processing machinery, general equipment, bearings and valves, and other common parts) in the second half drop rate will increase, will exceed the industry average.
Early lag reasons because the economy is still high in some sub sectors such as container, bearings and valves, electrical and general instrumentation industry cautious, these sub sectors may be expected in the near future to reach the high point of the economy, then there degree of decline. The early decline in the larger sub sectors such as construction machinery may be smaller base and a certain degree of recovery. And rail transportation equipment and shipbuilding is expected to continue to rise.

A Short Story
Blink
By
Christopher Randall
The batter’ hands slides down the maple shaft of his signature Barry Bonds baseball bat. His eyes focus on his target. His grip tightens on the bat. His muscles tighten. His mind races. The target moves closer. His next swing will change his life forever. It’s time. The batter steps into his swing.
CRACK!
The bat connects with its target like a mosquito to a vein.
“RUN”, Tim yells to him from behind.
His fingers loosen on his most prized possession. His heart beat out of his chest. He drops the bat and heads for home only steps behind Tim. The batter’s victim falls to the ground along side the Barry Bonds original. Blood pours from his mouth, making its way through the two weeks of unshaven stubble on his chin and finding a home in a pool on the cold concrete. His ghostly blue eyes focus on two young teens running away through the dark alley.
Jack’s mind spins. He wonders why he was attacked. Why him?
So many homeless people in this wretched city of ruined lives and lost dreams, Jack thought, and I am the lucky winner tonight. I should have played the lottery.
His eyes want to close but he has seen too many movies to know not to let that happen.
Jack blinks, making sure he opens his eyes again.
The violent youth reach the end of the alley. Tim cuts the corner and disappears from sight. The batter stops and turns toward the helpless man. Jack feels his blood pulsing from his mouth with every beat of his heart. The batter’s eyes fall on his most prized possession lying next to its bleeding victim. The young batter cautiously walks back toward Jack. He bends down to grab his maple memories of times long past. Jack stares up at the young batter.
Jack blinks.
Jacks dad stands over him. Jack has just learned how to ride a bike for the first time. Eight years old may be a little late to learn but this was the first time he had someone in his life to teach him. Jack has just gotten his first taste of road rash. The bike’s tire spins like a lopsided roulette wheel next to the pool of blood forming under his scraped knee. The Bill Laskey baseball card that would make the motor sound as it slapped the spokes is now worthless shreds of paper on the ground.
“Get up, Jack,” his father tells him in his kind, deep voice that Jack has found so much comfort in the last year.
“It hurts, help me up,” Jack cries. The small puddle of blood by his knee seems like the Red Sea to his young mind. Jack feels as if his heart is trying to betray him and pump every last drop of blood from his body.
His father bends down and looks him in the eyes, “You have to learn to get up on your own. I won’t always be around to help you up.”
Jack wipes tears from his dirty cheeks and pushes himself up off the ground with his shaking arms.
“That’s my boy,” Jack’s father says with pride.
Jack stands up and brushes the last remnants of asphalt and dirt from his bloody knees. His father walks toward him with his arms wide. Jack runs up to give him a hug.
Jack blinks.
The batter grabs the bat off the ground. Jack wheezes ass he tries to breath. Tim’s wiry body steps around the corner and back into the alley. His eyes twitching as if he has had one to many long night in a bus stop bathroom with a spoon and a needle.
“What the hell are you doing, man? The cops are coming we have to go.” Tim yells.
The batter holds up a hand to silence the panicked teen. His head tilts as he stares into the fading light of Jack’s eyes. He takes a few steps closer.
Jack blinks.
Jack sees the woman of his dreams slowly walking down the isle. Her honey brown eyes covered in a white veil that doesn’t quite match the t-shirt and jeans she is wearing. Jack doesn’t notice the fake plastic flowers or the bad organ music playing through speaker imbedded in the ceiling right next to the fire alarm. He doesn’t notice the overweight Elvis impersonator yawning behind him who has already performed 38 weddings today and just wants to get home to watch the baseball game. Jack’s attention is on Maria.
Jack’s parents sit in the front row. 48 seats sit behind them empty. For a brief moment he takes his eyes off of his beautiful bride to see his father with his arm around his mother who is sobbing uncontrollably. A tear runs down the cheek of the man that taught him everything he knows from baseball to being a good father, husband, and son. A lump grows in Jack’s throat.
Jack blinks.
A cough rises from deep in his left lung where a broken rib has now made its home. Blood sprays on the ground from Jack’s mouth. He tries gasping for air. What little air he can inhale feels like needles shooting through his lungs.
The batter stands above him staring down into his eyes. The batter notices a distinct scar over Jack’s left eye. He bends down to take a closer look. The batter uses the sleeve of his dark sweatshirt to wipe some of the blood away from Jack’s gasping mouth.
Jack blinks.
His father stares up at him. Jack knows that this will be the last moment he will have with his father. He grabs the hand of the man that raised him from the age of seven, the man that loved him like he was his own son. The man that not only married his mother but also stepped in to be a father to a child whose biological father couldn’t care less about him. Jack lays his head on his father’s chest. His father mumbles.
“What’s that, dad?” Jack asks.
His father looks into Jack’s eyes and finds the air in his lungs to repeat his final words to his loving son.
“Don’t forget to pick yourself back up.”
His father’s eyes close for the last time. A tear rolls down Jack’s face for the strongest man he has ever known.
Jack blinks.
“Oh no,” the batter says to himself.
He stares down at a small scar above Jack’s left eye. He turns toward Tim who stands nervously at the end of the alley.
“I think I know this guy,” the batter exclaims.
“Well it’s too late to do anything about it now,” Tim yells back as he backs out of the alley, “the cops are on their way. I can hear the sirens.”
The frightened youth turns the corner and disappears into the flickering streetlights of the city.
The batter reaches down and grabs Jack’s hand.
Jack blinks.
The mayor squeezes Jack’s hand and smiles for the camera. For Jack his dream of opening a youth center to get kids off the streets is finally coming true. For the mayor it is just another opportunity to get his face in the papers.
“The Samuel J. Cook Youth Recreation Center is now open to the public,” the mayor announces, “Welcome.”
Jack’s father would be proud to have a youth center named after him. Jack smiles as children rush the doors. Kids grab basketballs, footballs, and all other sorts of sporting equipment from the back of a supply truck that the city donated to the facility before running through the open doors.
A young boy stands at Jack’s side staring up at him. The boy extends his hand. Jack kneels down to be eye level with the boy and shakes his hand.
“Thank you, sir.” The boy says.
Jack smiles, “You’re very welcome sir.” He holds up his index figure to make sure the young boy doesn’t go away.
Jack walks to the supply truck and grabs a bat from the back. He hands it to the boy. The young boy’s eyes light up as he reads the mark burned into the maple.
Barry Bonds Signature.
“What is you’re name, son?” Jack asks the boy.
“Jack, like you.” The boy replies.
“Well, that is a great name.” Jack responds.”Now when you’re out there, remember to keep your eye on the ball, but not too much on the ball,” Jack points to a scar over his left eye.
“Yes, sir, I’ll remember,” the young boy says as he takes his new bat and runs through the recreation center and out into the baseball field in the back. Jack smiles like a proud father of three dozen happy children.
A woman in her mid thirties steps up to Jack, smiling as her son runs inside. “I just wanted to say thank you, Mr. Winters. My son Jack has had kind of a rough life as it is, and as you know with all of the gangs in our area, he needed something like this to help him stay on the right track for the future and not get drawn in by the streets.”
“It is my pleasure, ma’am.” Jack replies.
Cameras flash in Jack’s eyes.
Jack blinks.
Sirens ring in Jack’s ears. Red and blue lights dance along the old brick walls of the alley as the ambulance and police approach. The young batter sits down next to the man he surprised with a bat to the ribs just minutes before. His heart pounds, knowing the trouble he is in but unwilling to leave the injured man.
An ambulance stops in front of the alley. The headlights blind Jack’s already dimming vision.
Jack blinks.
Paramedics rush through the halls of the hospital. Jack runs to keep up with them. Blood pours from a large cut on his shoulder. That is the last thing he is worried about right now. He tries to grab the limp hand of his wife as it hangs from the speeding gurney. Doctors bark orders at nurses as they rush the silent beauty into the emergency room. A doctor stops Jack before he gets into the room.
“I’m sorry sir, you will have to stay out here,” the doctor tells him, “I will have someone come to check out your injuries.”
Jack’s mind moves a thousand miles a minute. He slumps against the wall. The shattered pieces of windshield from his tiny Honda dig into his shoulder. Thin streams of blood run down his arm. The alcohol in it keeps his wounds from clotting. The car that was about to be traded in for a family sized car now sits in a crumpled mess on the freeway. He presses his shoulder against the wall to feel something. His mind goes numb. Glass shards stab at his shoulder. The night’s drinks stab at his mind. His heart is on an operating table in the emergency room and he knows it may not beat again. He promised Maria that he wasn’t drunk. He will now have to live with his last lie. Neither the police nor the paramedics questioned his sobriety. After all, it was the other guy that ran the stop light and hit them. Jack knows he could have avoided being hit if he weren’t drunk. Jack drops his head in his hands. Tears flow over his wedding ring.
Jack blinks.
The reverse lights of the ambulance slowly creep through the dirty, rat infested alley. The rotting smell of food from the Italian restaurants dumpster blend with the exhaust from the ambulance creating fumes that would make a rat vomit. Jack smells nothing.
The nervous batter fidgets with his hands as a police officer questions him as to what happened. Jack knows he is not confessing by the way he shrugs his shoulders. His ears catch hints of the conversation.
“I don’t kno……” the batters voice fades in and out, “…ust found hi…….this.”
The batters voice is silenced by the sound of the ambulance’s squeaking brakes. The ambulance doors swing open.
Jack blinks.
He steps into his lonely apartment. It has been seven bottles of vodka, eleven cases of beer, six bottles of gin, two joints, and seventy four shots of tequila since he lost his wife and unborn child. Jack drops his keys on the entry table. They catch the edge of the table and drop to the floor, taking a week of unpaid bills with them. Jack doesn’t notice. He twists the top off of the bottle that he bought for dinner and takes two big gulps. Seventy five, Seventy six. Jack drops down onto his couch and scratches his five day growth of beard. He hits the blinking button on the answering machine. It beeps to life. Jack sneers at the happy sound of the machine.
A woman’s voice flows from the tiny speaker.
“Hey, Jack. How are you doing? We are all kind of worried about you. You have been to work in a few da…..” Jack hits the delete button.
The machine beeps again. A man clears his throat before and begins his message.
“Mr. Winters, my name is Carl Martin from the city’s funding committee. I am sorry to inform you that due to strict budget cuts that have come through our office we are forced to terminate all funding to your youth center immediately. Please feel free to contact my office with any questions. My direct line is 415-5…..” Jack deletes the message.
He picks up a small box that has sat on his coffee table for two weeks now and opens the small hinged lid. A small plastic sports watch sits inside. The face of the watch is a baseball with tiny bats as the hour and minute hands. Jack reads the note attached to the box, “Thank you.” On the back of the note, scribbled in almost unreadable colored pencil it reads, “Your friend, Jack.”
Jack gulps from his bottled dinner. Seventy seven, Seventy eight.
Jack blinks.
The muffled voice of a young paramedic drips into Jack’s ear. “Can you hear me? What is your name sir?”
Jack tries to answer the young man, “Ja…” his voice trails off.
The paramedic searches Jacks pockets for any form of identification. Jack laughs in his mind. The smile never reaches his lips. He knows that any identification he had is long gone.
Jack blinks.
Jack shuts the door to his empty apartment for the last time. There is nothing left in there for him anymore. The eviction notice still hangs on the outside untouched. He stares at it for a minute and turns his back on his old life. Jack steps out onto the sidewalk and looks both ways down the street.
Which way to go, Jack thinks. He has nowhere to go and nowhere to be. Jack wanders out into the world. He makes his way to his old neighborhood where he grew up. The bright paint on the house he grew up in is now dirty and faded. The windows his mother would tediously clean every Sunday are now covered with bars. He stands on the spot where he first learned to ride a bike and where he first learned to pick himself up.
He wanders past the locked doors and boarded windows of what was once a retreat for children and a dream come true for him. Now it stands as a monument of how little a city cares for its youth. The windows were smashed after a week of being closed. Gang tags are spray painted all over the walls. Jack knows that the kids that vandalized the building were probably the same ones that used to help him clean up and repaint those same walls. Their spirit and pride now lost to the streets.
He wanders through the park where he first met Maria as she jogged past him, hair flowing behind her like a beautiful river filled with life. He finds his way past the restaurant he took her to on their first date. Jack stares in the window at their favorite table where a man and woman sit and enjoy their lunch and each others company. The man notices him staring and shoos him away with a flick of his hand.
He sits on the edge of the fountain where he proposed to his beautiful wife with the ring he saved so long for. He stares into the water. His reflection betrays the man that sat here happily long ago. He stands in front of the flower shop where he bought two dozen roses for Maria when they found out that she was pregnant. The sweet smell of roses turns the stomach of the now bitter man.
Jack finds himself standing in front of the hospital where he saw the love of his life for the last time. He pulls his wallet from his pocket and opens it up. He flips through the photos in their small plastic covers. He stops at a photo of him and his dad standing in front of the first bike he had ever owned. He flips to a sonogram of his unborn child. He had dreams of teaching him, or her, how to ride a bike for the first time like his father taught him. Jack’s hands start to tremble. He flips to the last picture and pulls it out of its protective sleeve. He grips the picture in his hand and drops his wallet to the ground. He stares at himself and the Maria on their wedding day in Las Vegas. Their arms wrapped around each other as though they were in the middle of a tornado, holding on for dear life. The hefty Elvis minister stands behind them, his eyes bloodshot from a lack of sleep. Maria is holding the bouquet of flowers they picked up in the hotel gift shop on the way to the chapel. Jacks heart beat quickens, feeling like a hollow thud in his chest. Jack wipes a tear from his eye and drops the photo to the ground. The photo lands in a puddle of water Jack wanders on.
Jack finds himself in a dimly lit alley. He doesn’t know how long he has been wandering for. His feet are telling him hours but his smell is telling him days.
Headlights from passing cars splash giant shadows on the old brick walls of the alley. Jack hears whispering in the distance. He listens to try to hear what the phantom voices are saying.
“You have to,” a raspy voice says, “Everyone has done it. It’s part of the initiation. Just do it,”
Jack wanders closer to the dumpster where the phantom voices are emanating from. A thin teenager, no more than fourteen steps out from behind the dumpster. His dark hood pulled over his head doesn’t hide his innocent eyes. The batter stares at Jack. Fear and uncertainty fills the young teenager’s eyes. A Barry Bonds Signature maple trembles in the nervous youths hands. Jack knows what’s coming.
Jack blinks.
Jack is strapped to a gurney. The paramedics start to push it toward the open doors of the ambulance. The chatter of the radio and the paramedics start to blend together in Jack’s ears. The flashing lights on top of the ambulance don’t seem as bright in Jack’s eyes anymore.
The young batter breaks away from the cop and runs to Jack’s side. He bends down to whisper in Jack’s ear.
“I’m sorry, sir, please forgive me.” The batter whispers.
Jack forgave him the moment he stepped out from behind the dumpster.
“What is your name, son?’” Jack mumbles. His voice is almost incoherent.
The paramedics stop and look up at the batter.
“Jack,” the boy answers nervously.
A slight smile crosses Jack’s blood encrusted lips. He reaches for the deepest breath he can grasp. A whisper is all that comes from his mouth.
“Well, that is a great name,” he tells the young man.
Young Jack’s eyes fill with tears. His legs give way and he drops to his knees.
Jacks heart beats slower. His chest no longer hurts. His eyes get heavy.
Jack blinks.
Jack’s looks up at his father standing above him. Jack’s wife stands next to him cradling a newborn baby in her arms. His father reaches a hand down to him.
“Let me help you up, son.”
